Public transport free of charge!

I often get reactions to this like: “So how are we supposed to pay for public transport if not from fares? From the budget? On debt?” And I usually answer people like this: “And what do you think we're paying for it with now?” The vast majority of DPMO's budget comes from city subsidies. Public transport is a service that you can't run for profit and at the same time expect any quality. For the whole operation, the fare is a token sum, but for less well-off citizens it can mean most of a day's pay. If we abolished fares, it would be an investment directly in citizens, in our air, in our roads and in our local businesses.

Investors have no business in housing construction!

Concrete doesn't care whether it's poured by a city employee or by a private joint-stock company. But for some reason, construction is always more expensive when it's the joint-stock company. The city should set up in-house housing construction, which in the long term would significantly reduce the overall costs of construction, because we'd stop paying the private profit that housing construction doesn't need at all. If the parasites who make a living by extracting rent from our citizens in exchange for no contribution on their part had to compete with the city (or a city-backed housing cooperative) that wouldn't ask tenants for more than is strictly necessary for maintenance and the further expansion of the housing stock, they would soon starve.

No to the multi-purpose hall!

The multi-purpose hall on Velkomoravská is just a new version of the Aquapark. Just like with the Aquapark, the only ones who'll make money on this are private shareholders. We have even less of a guarantee of profit than twenty years ago, and we're still one of the most indebted cities in the whole country. If we want to invest on debt in the hope that growth will catch up with it, let's invest in citizens and not in oligarchs and their corporations!

A few words about me

I live in Olomouc and plan to live here for a few more decades. Apart from my political activities I'm a student, although I sometimes earn a bit on the side as a translator. I'm a Communist; I take Alexander Dubček, Miloslav Ransdorf and Fred Hampton as my role models. I'm running because, even though many people don't realise it, municipal politics is immensely important and has an immense impact on our everyday lives. The left won't break through to the forefront of the political world by giving up our principles for coalitions and governments with the outright right in the name of supposed “patriotism” or “democracy”, but by listening to the problems that trouble people and applying truly left-wing solutions to them, just like KPÖ in Austria, DSA in America or the NDP in Canada. It may take 20, 30, even 50 or 100 years before it allows us real systemic change, but it's something worth fighting for. I believe in this 100%.
