When I spend time in Chomutov's squares and streets, I notice that our public space is missing something. You just don't feel comfortable, whether on the main square, on Palackého or on Čelakovského. Chomutov needs good public space. Various towns across the Czech Republic and abroad have realised that public space needs to be built so that people enjoy spending time there. And it's time to move public space in Chomutov into the 21st century too.
When I talk to young people from our town, most of them say they can't wait to get out of here. Abroad, to Prague or anywhere else in Czechia. And honestly – I'm not surprised. Chomutov doesn't offer young people much these days. Opportunities to get involved? Cultural life? Interesting places to go? Chomutov lacks all of that. I'd like town policy to be planned with young people in mind too. Secondary school students, university students, young families – so that they also have a reason to stay here and not move away from Chomutov.
Cycling infrastructure in Chomutov is backward. And yet the town has great conditions for cycling! The wider town centre is flat, the surroundings have beautiful natural landmarks and a reason to get on a bike and ride not only around town but also beyond it. Unfortunately, the town doesn't support cycling. Cyclists get forgotten in planning, even though they're a fully fledged part of traffic. I'm glad that a bike-sharing system has finally been set up recently (as one of the last big towns!). But that's not enough – cycling infrastructure needs to be expanded so that people aren't afraid to actively use their bikes, and Chomutov needs to be properly connected to the cycling network.
I was born in Chomutov and graduated from the local grammar school. I've just finished my 3rd year at the Faculty of Law of Charles University in Prague, but I regularly come back to Chomutov. I've been involved in Chomutov politics for several years; since 2022 I've been a member of the Chomutov city committee for education, upbringing and employment, where I focus mainly on education and young people.
For the last three years, besides studying, I've been volunteering on a youth education project in the fields of international relations, diplomacy and public space, and I also work in tourism. In my free time I like cycling, working out and playing the guitar.
